How to choose flake colours for your garage floor

Start with the colours already in the room

Look at the features that will remain after the floor is finished: cabinet fronts, wall paint, storage racks, the garage door and the doorway into the house. Decide whether the floor should blend into that setting or provide a stronger contrast. Bring photographs of planned cabinets if they have not been installed yet.

Try comparing one quieter blend with one more contrasting blend instead of reviewing every available sample at once. Put each beside the same cabinet or wall so you are judging it against a consistent reference.

Compare physical samples in different lighting

Review samples with the garage door open and closed, using the lights you normally rely on. Move them near the entrance and farther into the room. A sample that looks right under showroom lighting can be harder to judge for a dimmer storage corner.

Use online photographs to collect ideas, then confirm the selection with the installer. Screens, camera exposure and surrounding colours affect what you see in a photograph. Keep a record of the approved blend name or reference so it can be identified in the quote.

Ask what the sample actually represents

Clarify the base colour, flake blend, coverage and exposed finish. Ask whether the sample includes the proposed topcoat and whether its texture is representative. A colour chip alone cannot answer every question about a completed floor.

Manufacturer decorative-system guidance treats sheen and surface finish as selectable aspects of a system. Ask which choices are available for your proposal and how they fit your intended use. Keep traction and care requirements in that conversation rather than choosing only by gloss.

Choose the small details before installation

Decide how the floor will meet steps, raised concrete edges and the garage-door threshold. Identify where a finish should continue and where it should stop. If adjoining surfaces are also being coated, ask to see how the proposed colours work together.

Send SMA two or three references that capture what you like, along with current photos of the garage. Explain which feature matters most: a lighter overall appearance, a quieter pattern or coordination with cabinets. That is more helpful than expecting an exact match to a photograph taken in another space.
